Understand what the term means in the proposal
Functional medicine is used to describe approaches that consider a person’s history, lifestyle and possible contributors to illness. What is offered can vary. Ask the practitioner to describe the actual assessment and care plan rather than relying on the name.
Attention to contributing causes, prevention and individual circumstances is also part of conventional clinical practice. It is misleading to assume that one approach alone addresses causes while all other medicine merely treats symptoms.
Evaluate each component separately
An extended consultation, a laboratory panel, a supplement and a dietary change are different interventions. Evidence for one component cannot establish that an entire commercial program works. Ask what each component is intended to achieve.
For a test, clarify clinical validity, interpretation and what would change after the result. For a treatment, ask about evidence in people with a comparable condition, meaningful outcomes, uncertainty and possible harms. More measurements do not automatically improve decisions.
Qualifications and coordination matter
Clarify the practitioner’s professional qualifications, scope of practice and responsibilities. Ask who diagnoses conditions, prescribes medications and communicates with your usual treating team. Continuity matters particularly when several professionals are involved.
Do not discontinue prescribed treatment or delay investigation of persistent symptoms on the basis of a program’s marketing. Individual decisions should be discussed with the responsible medical professionals.
Supplements are part of the safety assessment
The NCCIH advises considering supplement safety, potential interactions and the limits of product claims. Tell the treating team about all products you use, including nonprescription supplements and herbal preparations.
Ask for the purpose, expected duration, evidence, monitoring and total cost of each proposed product. Clarify any commercial relationship when the practitioner also sells the recommended products. Natural does not automatically mean suitable for you.
Make the objective measurable and practical
Define what improvement would matter and how it will be assessed. Agree when the plan should be reviewed, changed or stopped. A claim about correcting a root cause should be supported by a clear explanation and appropriate evidence.
